The kitchen, for people around the world, is their immediate source of food and entertainment. Throughout the year, no matter the occasion, the kitchen tends to be the place where people choose to congregate, and discuss their past experiences and future events. Some choose to do this around a dining table, to add a touch of formality to the event. However, many people feel that sitting on bar stools at the kitchen island, while socialising is at its most exciting and inspiring!

Most kitchen islands reside in the centre of the dining area, however, some have been placed near the conservatory of a home, to make the most of the light that seeps through it. Kitchen islands and bar have evolved to serve a number of purposes, but there are staple ingredients which they must possess to ensure it stands the test of time. Firstly the material of the island top itself needs to be considered. Seeing as it is the surface that will be used the most, it needs to be sturdy and resistant to moisture.

Kitchen islands, and breakfast bars alike, are usually made of wooden cabinets with a top layer of granite, laminate or the more extravagant marble. They often possess a rectangular shape, breakfast bars can adopt a number of forms, whether defined or curved, and have a slight overhang of around 20cm to allow for people to tuck their stools in when eating a delicious meal.

Secondly, the owner will need to consider what features of the kitchen island bar are necessary, so family and visitors alike may enjoy dining there. Traditionally, kitchen islands have drawers so people can store their cutlery, tea towels and sometimes their crockery. They also sometimes have a gas or electric hob, which is ideal to prepare a quick fry up to start you on your day! Thanks to modern day design, preparing a meal can be done much more quickly, and conveniently, and you don’t have to have a generous budget to bring this to your home! Today’s islands come with bar sinks so you may wash your vegetables, and built-in sockets to plug in your coffee machine and radio. If space is modest, you can even have wheels attached, so they may be unveiled when needed or even have a built in refridgerator, to keep foods cool extra shelving, for soup cans and spices.  With all this is mind; it is easy to overlook how best to furnish the island

As the surface doesn’t usually extend outwardly, the bar stool may need to be quite slim, such as the Mimi Chrome stool, with gas lift mechanism for adjustable height, or even the fixed height bar stools. Both examples come in a variety of colours, so they may compliment, or even contrast with, existing pieces of furniture within the home.
In every home around the world, there is great potential for a kitchen island bar to be introduced. Whether your home oozes with rustic charm or is sleek and contemporary, the kitchen island bar is an ideal way to complete your dining space.
